About this event

This is an opportunity for teachers and leaders of English in primary schools or at key stage 3 to hear from award winning author Bob Cox about some of the ways exciting, challenging and ambitious English is being developed in schools using the ‘opening doors’ approaches.

Not only that, it’s the launch of a hub at Edith Moorhouse School around which schools from the area can gather periodically to explore strategies for challenging, rich and ambitious English teaching! It will have much more of an impact than a single one off key-note, as suggestions for gap tasks will facilitate the application of the approaches. Of course, Bob and his ‘Opening Doors’ team – Leah Crawford, Angela Jenkins and Julie Sargent – will be providing ideas and inspiration, but so will you, the teachers, as the hub grows. Some of you have been working with Bob and the team for a while and these sessions will maintain momentum with fresh case studies from across the UK.

Session 1 - Wednesday May 8th 3.30 pm - 5.30pm

Session 2 - Tuesday October 1st 3.30pm - 5.30pm

Session 3 - Wednesday November 13th 3.30pm - 5.30pm

£75 booking fee covers all 3 sessions .

Initially, Bob will explore not just ‘what’ the opening doors approaches are but ‘how’ teachers and English Leads are making exciting changes and building a rich English curriculum. This will include:

  • An explanation of the key principles and strategies that can help you inject ambition and challenge into English
  • Brief case studies and reference to the work of opening doors schools.
  • Advice on planning and routes to whole school use of challenging texts, past to present and across the globe.

Bob Cox is the award-winning author of the ‘Opening Doors’ series and a frequent speaker at regional, national and even international conferences. He has also supported about 500 schools in-house. Bob is due to speak this year at the Osiris World Summit, the UKLA International Conference in Brighton and at numerous regional events. ‘Opening Doors’ also has ongoing links with Herts for Learning, PIXL Education, The Birmingham Education Partnership and clusters and trusts across the UK like River Learning Trust.
