Event description

Description

Unfortunately this event has had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Apologies for any disappointment caused.

Artist, poet, philosopher, gardener – Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925–2006) was a Scottish polymath of international importance. Come along to this celebratory event and discover how University of Edinburgh staff and students are collaborating on innovative projects to open up access to Finlay’s work.

Join us on the 6th Floor of the Main University Library in George Square for a morning of discussions and presentations, followed by a coach trip to Little Sparta in the afternoon.

In Four Blades (1987) – a significant sculpture recently acquired by the University – Finlay explores the ideas of liberty, virtue, terror and violence, linked to the French Revolution. A discussion of the student-led project to determine in which context this powerful artwork is permanently exhibited will also explore the wider issues surrounding public art acquisitions and display.

Enhancing access to Finlay’s magnum opus Little Sparta – a garden in the Pentland Hills containing almost 300 artworks – is the ambition behind the Sharing Little Sparta project. Hear about the project’s creative outcomes in the form of an innovative new interactive website and app developed by a student-staff Design Informatics team.

After lunch, attendees will be taken on a coach trip to Little Sparta itself. There will be two hours to explore Finlay’s work in situ and to test the new interactive app.

This event will appeal to those interested in contemporary art, poetry, website and app design, museum collections and public art display, Classics and French history, among others!

Suitable for age 18+
