Derek Jones, Senior Lecturer in Design, will present a talk based on the following abstract:
The Open University has a strong legacy vision: Open to People, Places, and Methods. This was articulated in the OU’s inaugural lecture in 1969 by Lord Geoffrey Crowther, the first Chancellor.
That was well over 50 years ago, and the vision is more or less the same today. But what is a vision in an organisation like the OU, and how does it work?
To answer this question, we’ll travel even further back in time and look at the work of The Rt Hon The Baroness Lee of Asheridge. I will re-introduce you to Jennie Lee as a designer of The Open University. In doing so, you will get a glimpse of how visions are created, shared, and owned between people, and why that matters.
This OpenTalk will kick off the Faculty of STEM's Freshers' events for the 2025 October module start. Alongside this event will be a lot of social media content and other events as well. You can see what events are on offer by regularly looking at https://stem.open.ac.uk/events.
