Blood | Violence | Sex | Humour

As seen in Time Out and The Richmond Magazine, opera singer Helen Astrid (formerly English National Opera) reveals the beauty, fascination and myths surrounding one of the most celebrated of all art forms containing blood, violence, sex and even humour.

On the last Wednesday of each month beginning in February 2019, Helen will discuss and give a simple analysis of one major opera at each talk. The content includes a brief history of the opera, the story and musical examples to heighten your enjoyment, understanding and appreciation. Each opera is to be performed at either the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden or at English National Opera in Spring 2019.

Doors open at 7.15pm. Each talk begins at 7.30pm promtly and end at 9.00pm.

La Tosca (Giacomo Puccini) ~ Wednesday 27 February
Containing some tragic scenes, as well as some of Puccini's most famous and best-loved lyrical arias, this political thriller set in Rome is an intense experience.

The Magic Flute (W.A.Mozart) ~ Wednesday 27 March
Mozart at his best in this delightful and charming of all his comic operas in the 'singspiel' genre. This classic concerns the quest for truth and reason, love and enlightenment.

Dido and Aeneas (Henry Purcell) ~ Wednesday 22 May
Without a doubt, one of the greatest operatic masterpieces in the English language which contains the most poignant and heart-rending of all finales. Showing at English National Opera from 16 May - 1 June 2019.

By the end of each session, you will have a more in-depth understanding, knowledge and sheer enjoyment about each of the operas studied.

Ticket includes a wine reception.

Parking in the streets around the church for the most part on Sundays is free. For weekday events and activities at the church, the nearest paid for parking is Marble Hill Park. Please visit Parkopedia for more information. Please always check for signage when parking.

Buses:
There are good bus links to and from the church with the 33, 490, H22, R68, R70 and N22 all stopping directly opposite the church. Just listen out for “St Stephen’s Church” when on any of the buses listed.
