About this event

★Opera Live at Home★ Relax, Pour Yourself a Drink and Enjoy!

We are fortunate to present award-winning writer, actor and director Tama Matheson for our performance this month. As an opera director, Tama has worked all over the world, including Sydney Opera House, Oper Graz, Houston Grand Opera, Melbourne and Perth and South Australian Opera. Royal Opera House Covent Garden, The Mariinsky Theatre, Teatro Real Madrid and Baden Baden Opera.

Tama will delve into the history of the opera and excavate a handful of the better-and lesser-known theatre works that underpin the operatic canon. This performance offers treasures rarely seen in their theatrical form.

Who are the great playwrights of the operatic world? What are the plays that inspired the great operas, and what was it about them that captivated the imaginations of the composers who wrote them?

From Shakespeare to Schiller, Goethe to Victor Hugo and Büchner to David Garrick, a trove of ravishingly dramatic theatre gleams beneath the landscape of the operatic genre. In Prima le Parole, Tama brings some of these theatre works to life.

Operas on the examination table:

  • Verdi's Don Carlos and Rigoletto
  • Rossini's Guillaume Tell
  • Gounod's Faust
  • Berg's Wozzeck
  • Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto
  • Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot

Though many of these works remain firmly in the theatrical repertoire, many of them are quite unknown to us as plays today – we know only their operatic incarnations; yet, in their day, they were greatly admired as theatre-pieces, and often enjoyed enormously long runs in the theatre. Most importantly of all, they were powerful enough to urge the great composers to translate them into music.

Fascinating for any opera-lover to look anew at these theatre pieces, and to see them as the great composers saw them – as visceral and exciting plays, capable of capturing the imaginations of operatic dramatists.

A short Q&A session follows the performance where audience members may ask questions to the artist(s).

NB: Start time is 7.30PM (GMT, London UK). Our performances are global so please see the Time Zone for your country. This performance may be viewed on-demand to all ticketholders for 30 days after the nsmission date.

We look forward to welcoming you!
