About this event

Opera Live At Home Relax, Pour Yourself a Drink and Enjoy!

We are delighted to host young baritone Julien Van Mellaerts in an evening of opera arias performed as a livestream from The Clock Tower in St Pancras, London.

The programmes includes:

  • Mozart - Hai gia vinta la causa.... Vedrò mentr'io sospiro, Le nozze di Figaro
  • Mozart - Papagena! Papagena! Die Zauberflöte
  • Britten - Look! Through the port comes the moonshine astray, Billy Budd
  • Korngold - Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen, Die tote Stadt
  • Donizetti - Forse in quel cor sensibile...Qui ribelle ognun ti chiama Roberto Devereux
  • Thomas - O vin dissipe la tristesse, Hamlet

Julien Van Mellaerts represented New Zealand at Cardiff Singer of the World 2019. His broadcasts and recordings include Britten War Requiem (Siren Media), Songs by Duparc, Fauré, Richard Strauss and Vaughan Williams (Classic fM), In Tune and Lunchtime Recitals (BBC Radio 3), Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Rádio Clásica España) Die Zauberflöte, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome (Medici TV) and The Travelling Companion (SOMM Recordings).

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost him debuts with the Israeli Opera as Silvio Pagliacci and at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisbon, for Des Knaben Wunderhorn, a return to the Verbier Festival as Masetto Don Giovanni and Mangus The Knot Garden with English Touring Opera, Julien Van Mellaerts organized and curated Whānau: Voices of Aotearoa, far from home. Devised to highlight the plight of and raise funds for those New Zealand singers unable either to return home or work, the concert was recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall and broadcast on both YouTube and Radio New Zealand Concert.

Gary Matthewman is one of the UK's leading song pianists, performing worldwide.

A regular artist at Wigmore Hall, other recent and forthcoming appearances include recitals at Carnegie Hall New York, Musikverein Vienna, Rudolfinum Prague, Philharmonie Paris, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, and in Stockholm, Lisbon, Washington DC, Santa Fe, Toronto, São Paulo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Melbourne and Sydney. His UK Festival performances include the BBC Proms, Aldeburgh, Brighton, Buxton, Leeds Lieder, Oxford Lieder and Glyndebourne.

Gary’s past and future recital partners include Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Sumi Jo, Nuccia Focile, Joan Rodgers, Ailyn Perez, Golda Schultz, Louise Alder, Sarah-Jane Brandon, Siobhan Stagg, Joyce DiDonato, Kate Lindsey, Caitlin Hulcup, Mark Padmore, John Mark Ainsley, Robin Tritschler, Sir Thomas Allen, Sir Simon Keenlyside, Roderick Williams, Markus Werba, Andrei Bondarenko, Benjamin Appl, Adam Plachetka and Matthew Rose.

Gary is professor of vocal repertoire at London's Royal College of Music, and repertoire coach for the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
