Event description
Operatic Performance & Discussion: Kurt Weill's 'The Tsar Wants His Photograph Taken'

About this Event

With an exhibition view from 6pm.

Part of the Berlin-London: The Lost Photographs of Gerty Simon Event Series.

Earlier this year, academics from UCL Hebrew and Jewish Studies joined forces with opera makers to present Kurt Weill's long-neglected comic opera The Tsar Wants His Photograph Taken in its first UK professional performance since 1983. Drawing on Professor Michael Berkowitz's research into the connection between Jewish women and photography, the production was praised by The Guardian for its "fresh translation... unlocking the mysteries" and by Opera Magazine for its "punchy, exuberant staging."

In a one-off event, some of the cast and academic team reunite to present excerpts from the opera, discuss the research and creative processes that led to this unique fusion of academia and opera, and give audiences the chance to ask more about how this work was brought back to life.

More information on the performers can be found here.

Tickets cost £9 + booking fee.
