Event description

Description

Operation Medical School is an intensive course designed by medical students from Imperial College London, in order to comprehensively prepare you for every step of your Medical School application.

For this Summer event, we have decided to dedicate more time and focus on the UKCAT and personal statement, as the event coincides with these sections of the medical school application, but the BMAT and medical school interviews will also be covered extensively.

The course will start at 10:00 on Saturday 15th July 2017 with an introduction to the day, although registration will start from 09:30. During the introduction, students will be informed about the plan for the day, and general information about the medical degree will be discussed. This includes a talk on the different teaching methods used at different UK medical schools, allowing students to make a more informed decision when applying, and what life at Imperial College School of Medicine entails.

Following the introduction, attendees will be guided through the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT), which is currently compulsory for 25 UK medical schools. Students will be advised on how to apply for the exam, what the exam entails, how to prepare for the exam, and how to excel in the exam. Students will also go through numerous question examples for each section of the UKCAT, and every aspect of the UKCAT will be covered by a tutor who, last year, scored in the top decile of the country.

After a short break, the session on formulating a successful personal statement will commence. Students will be comprehensively guided on the process of producing a personal statement by discussing the structuring, wording, content and other aspects, while also looking through examples from previous applicants.

13:45 – A one and a quarter hour lunch will commence, and a buffet lunch will be provided for each attendee.

Following lunch, the next session will be about the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT), which is compulsory for 8 UK universities, including Imperial College, Cambridge, Oxford and UCL. Similar to the UKCAT session, students will be advised on applying for the exam and how best to approach it, while also going through numerous question examples with the tutor for each section of the BMAT. Results will also be discussed.

After a short break, students will be given an insight into what medical interviews are like and how to prepare for and approach them. Due to the diverse experiences of our tutors, students will learn about the interview process of most medical schools and will have the opportunity to individually ask the tutors about their experiences after the session. Ethical questions and how one should approach them will also be discussed.

The day will end with an optional tour of Imperial College London's South Kensington Campus where students will be led out in groups by the tutors. This will be an opportunity for students to ask any final questions they may have, while also seeing what life at Imperial College Medical School is like.

Upon completion of the event, a certificate of attendance will be mailed electronically.

A detailed booklet will also be provided during registration.

Tickets are limited for this session.
