Every day civil servants use their negotiation skills, whether with external partners; within their department, or across Whitehall. Negotiating is crucial to ensuring the services offered to the public are as useful and cost-effective as possible.
As part of the AMSG LEAD Programme we are delighted to offer the opportunity for our Academies and Maintained Schools Group Team Leaders and SEOs to experience this negotiation practice training. Already trialled by Deputy Directors and Senior Advisers, this 1-day workshop helps you refresh and enhance your negotiation skills. You will explore the psychology of conflict and its role in negotiation, and the differences between distributive and integrative bargaining. You will also learn about the roles power, influence and persuasion play in personal communication.
The session introduces the latest models and frameworks to stimulate your thinking about negotiation, as well as giving you the opportunity to practise negotiating with a professional role player. The role play can be tailored to a real negotiation scenario that you are working on right now. Working in small groups of 5 you will have 45 minutes of roleplay practice.
There is an hour of preparation required for this workshop which includes the following:
1. Read an extract from Getting To Yes to understand the core concepts of distributive vs integrative negotiation strategies – Roger Fisher and William Ury (this will be sent in advance no need to research)
2. Read the article The Influence Model; using reciprocity and exchange to get what you need – Cohen & Bradford (this will be sent in advance no need to research)
3. Identify an upcoming negotiation scenario (formal or informal) and fill in a template to describe the situation. Submit before face-to-face so that the business role players can prepare for each practice session.
Places are limited to 15 on each day so please book as soon as possible.
Please note that although tea and coffee will be available throughout the day this event is not catered - you will be required to provide your own lunch.
