About this event

Business • Environment & Sustainability

Join us on 7th October 4:30–6:00 PM in UCL's IOE Bedford Way Room W3.05 and online for a thought-provoking conversation with Professor Joyashree Roy and Dr Bipashyee Ghosh.

This hybrid event, Opportunities to Prosper in the Carbon Constrained World for South and Southeast Asian Countries, will explore how late-developing economies can leverage low historical emissions, emerging electrification trends, and early adoption of innovative technologies to build resilient, sustainable futures. The session will examine how integrating demand-side solutions, expanding clean energy, and strengthening regional cooperation can unlock economic opportunities while advancing human wellbeing.

Professor Roy is a Distinguished Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, and one of the world’s leading experts in energy and climate economics. She is also Founder Director of the Centre on South and South-East Asia Multidisciplinary Applied Research Network. She was part of the IPCC team awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and has served as Coordinating Lead Author across multiple IPCC assessment reports. Ranked among the world’s top 2% most influential scientists in energy research (Stanford, 2023), she has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers and advised on major global reports including the Stern Review. Her work focuses on energy, climate change, sustainable development, and transformative pathways for the Global South.

Dr Bipashyee Ghosh will chair the event and lead the conversation. She is a Lecturer in Engineering, Innovation and Public Policy at UCL STEaPP. Her research focuses on innovation, policy and sustainability transitions, with particular interest in transition dynamics in the Global South, especially South and Southeast Asia and Africa. She has contributed to international projects on Transformative Innovation Policy and Deep Transitions, aiming to foster sustainable, democratic and decolonial futures.

We look forward to welcoming you either in person in UCL or online via Teams (link will be shared with registered attendees closer to the time).
