Event Details

Opportunity Knocks is a collaborative event that brings together the best entrepreneurial talent, leading business experts, funders and the entrepreneurial eco-system. After the success of last year’s event in Scotland, and the recent events in Brighton & Leeds, we are back in Scotland for a second round of the Opportunity Knocks UK tour.

The day will highlight key success stories from companies who have grown their own business and know the difficult challenges that SMEs face. These companies will share their life lessons, insight, advice and top tips on how to succeed in the business world!

The Speed Mentors:

1. Matt Smith  - Co-Founder and Director -  Centre For Entrepreneurs

Matt is co-founder & director of the Centre for Entrepreneurs - a London-based think tank that promotes the role of entrepreneurs in creating economic growth and social well-being. It is chaired by serial entrepreneur and Sunday Times columnist Luke Johnson and is also home to the national enterprise campaign StartUp Britain. Previously, Matt co-founded NACUE – the student enterprise charity – and consultancy firm Entelligence. Matt is an advisor to the Enterprise Research Centre.

2. John Spindler - CEO Capital Enterprise

John Spindler is the CEO of Capital Enterprise and the co-founder and partner of the London Co-Investment Fund- the UK's No 1 seed venture capital fund. John is an experienced entrepreneur and in a personal capacity an active Business Angel in the London tech scene

3. Stephen Block - Faculty member & Entrepreneur in residence at Innovation Warehouse London

Having had a business career which spans from being Director of a retail business in the early 1980s to a businesses deploying wireless broadband in the noughties', I now help shape the next generation of digital entrepreneurs as a faculty member and entrepreneur in residence at the Innovation Warehouse in Smithfield, London. I have mentored, advised or assisted in their fund raising, companies across a number of sectors including:  e-commerce marketplaces, 3D mapping & augmented reality, next generation CRM platforms, social media analytics and bio-informatics.

4. Matt James - Head of UK Scouting - RBS Solutions

Head of UK Scouting in RBS Solutions connecting into the innovation ecosystem around London and the wider UK. RBS Solution’s role is to identify and progress to adoption innovative solutions that will add value to customers engaging across the spectrum from startups to the technology titans. The department incorporates technology research, global scouting, open collaboration and innovation engineering.

Recent examples of initiatives include the implementation of Facebook’s new Facebook at Work proposition and the partnership to bring Silicon Valley’s RocketSpace campus to the UK.In his time with RBS Matt has worked in a variety of change management and technology roles and has a Masters in Business Administration from Bristol Business School.

5. Wayne Bartlett - Chief Industry Strategist for Financial Services - Microsoft UK

Wayne Bartlett is the Chief Strategist for Financial Services Industry in the UK and is responsible for representing Microsoft’s point of view across Banking, Capital Markets and Insurance.As Chief Strategist, Wayne works closely with Financial Institutions both large and small to ensure that Microsoft is aligning it resources to assist customers transform to meet the needs and opportunities in the Digital Economy and that the industry needs and emerging trends are represented within the decision making corridors of Microsoft.

Wayne has previous held similar roles in New York and Melbourne for other large technology organisations including HP, Oracle and Sun Microsystems.He has an MBA from Monash University in Melbourne Australia. In 2007 Wayne returned to Monash University to sit on the Board of Advisers for MBA program within the Graduate School of Business

6. Daniel Sinclair Taylor - National Partnership Manager - Funding Circle

Dan Sinclair Taylor is the National Partnership Manager at Funding Circle, responsible for growing the reach and application of the Funding Circle platform via strategic partnerships with National and International organisations such as local government, traditional banks, SME service providers and online platforms.

He took his undergraduate degree at Oxford University, along with the founders of Funding Circle, and went on to practice law at a Magic Circle law firm before moving into strategic business development. 
Dan is passionate about tennis, motorbikes and technology.

7. Eyal Malinger - Investment Director - Beringea

Eyal is responsible for sourcing investments, executing deals and monitoring portfolio companies. He currently sits on the boards of Perfect Channel and Poq.

Prior to joining Beringea, Eyal was director of Corporate Development at Countrywide PLC where he oversaw investments in the Property Technology sector and helped set up Countrywide’s analytics division and asset management operations. Prior to this, he was Vice President with Oaktree Capital’s European private equity fund and a consultant with McKinsey & Company.

Eyal began his career as a software engineer developing advanced telecommunication solutions.Eyal has an MBA from Harvard Business School and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the Interdisciplinary Centre Herzliya

8. Mike Berry - Head of Sales, Financial Services, Dell EMC UK & Ireland

Mike has 20 years of experience in global technology and consulting sales involving worldwide client engagement, complex selling, investment and retail banking, security, and compliance. He currently leads a Dell EMC team focusing on banking, insurance and investment management clients.
