Where speed, size, weight, and power of compute and high-speed communication will become increasingly critical in the future Electro-Magnetic (EM) environment, the ability to leverage an Integrated Photonic Device into Information Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), EM Activities, or Autonomous applications (to mention just a few applications) within Defence could provide significant advantage offering commanders increased situational awareness and thus enhanced, operational decision-making capabilities.
Over the next 4 years Dstl is seeking to push the art of the possible in Sovereign capability in the field of Photonic compute through an investment of over £5M.
Dstl’s “Sovereign Integration and development of Photonic Integrated Circuits for defence applications” (SI-PICs) Extra Mural Research (EMR) project will engage and challenge the UK communities available within UK plc to deliver a game-changing technology that closely couples the compute technology to the sensor, enabling rapid processing.
This will require reaching across academia, start-ups, small and medium enterprises, foundries, packaging specialists and beyond to come together and deliver an ambitious technological advancement for the UK, exploiting current capabilities.
