About this event

OPUS Scientific Meeting - Online via ZOOM

We are delighted to invite you to the first in our new series of Scientific Meetings in celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary of the Journal of Organisational & Social Dynamics.

The Meaning of Greta: A psychosocial exploration of Greta Thunberg

Presenter: Dr Simon Western

During this first Scientific Meeting Dr Western will explore the phenomenon of Greta Thunberg. This paper utilises psycho-social theory and new social movement theory to explore the social meaning of ‘Greta’. It asks what ‘Greta’ evokes in our ‘social imaginary’ (Taylor 2009:146)? What conscious and unconscious identifications are projected onto ‘Greta’ that have made her the unlikely famous person she is? These questions are not about exploring her individual psychological, leadership or character traits, but focus on Greta Thunberg (now 18) as a social object (Latour 2005) who now has a vast following in her social network, including over 4.2 million Twitter followers, together with a new documentary film about her, and mainstream media coverage across the globe.

Simon Western, PhD, is CEO of The Eco Leadership Institute and Analytic-Network Coaching Ltd, delivering coaching to senior leaders internationally and training coaches drawing on psychoanalysis, critical, and network theory. Simon pioneered the theory of Eco-Leadership, and he consults to global leaders on how to deliver eco-leadership cultures in their organisations. He launched Edgy Ideas Podcast last year to bring psychosocial thinking to a greater audience www.analyticnetwork.con. Simon is past president of ISPSO and Adjunct Professor of UCD.

Organiser of OPUS Scientific Meeting: The Meaning of Greta

OPUS is a think-tank concerned with understanding society and organisations within society. We make sense of human behaviour by looking beyond the obvious to the underlying group dynamics, using the theory and practice of systems thinking, psychoanalysis & group relations.

We are a UK charity with an international membership. We organise regular events in London, with guest speakers talking on topical issues, an annual conference and quarterly Listening Posts.

We also offer training courses, publish a bi-annual journal and provide consultancy on issues such as organisational culture, leadership development, conflict resolution and group dynamics.
