Description

Substance misuse can have a detrimental effect on ones' oral health and as a department, we are very keen to provide oral health training to staff/volunteer groups to enable them to pass on valuable oral health advice to service users.


Learning Outcome 1

Know the main key oral health messages and be competent in providing tailored oral health advice to client groups.

  • Identify the features of a healthy mouth.
  • Quote the key oral health messages & identify the required maintenance routines necessary for improved oral health outcomes.
  • Appreciate the implications that poor oral health poses to overall health outcomes.
  • Recognise why oral health care is important.
  • Appreciate the general implications of drug use on a person’s oral health - inclusive of Methadone.
  • Be familiar with the “Fife Dental Advice Lines Protocol for Obtaining Dental Appointments for Service Users” Document.

Learning Outcome 2

To have knowledge of the issues and barriers to accessing oral health care, as often experienced by substance users.

  • Acknowledge the common risk factors associated with general health conditions and examine these in relation to substance user’s life patterns.
  • Recognise that the lowered health expectations of substance users can affect their perception of need in terms of both oral health and dental access.
  • Identify the barriers and enablers to dental care for substance users.
