Join us for a 3 hour free introduction to oral history with Paul Evans of Gloucestershire Archives.

Who is this course for?

Anyone interested in carrying out oral history interviews.

What does it involve?

The session lasts three hours and you will:

  • Learn how to gather and keep and share oral histories
  • Get “hands on” experience in using audio recording equipment

What will I get out of it?

By the end of the session you will:

  • Know how to plan an oral history project and prepare for an oral history interview
  • Know about the legal and ethical issues linked to gathering, keeping and sharing oral histories
  • Be able to explain consent and copyright to interviewees and use related documentation
  • Be able to foster mutual trust and a good rapport with an interviewee
  • Know how to carry out a successful interview
  • Be able to use oral history recording equipment
  • Have experience of conducting a short interview and being interviewed
  • Know how to save and back up an oral history recording
  • Know how to produce a summary transcript of an interview
  • Be aware of ways to share the memories you’ve recorded
  • Know where to find information and advice about oral history

How to get here

Yate train station is a 5 minute walk from the Council Offices. If coming by car please note that there is no parking at the Council offices except if a space is pre-booked. Please let us know if you require disabled parking. Parking can be found at Yate Railway Station car park.
