Review:

In his debut feature Mehmet Akif Buyukatalay quietly announces himself as a European director to watch. Reminiscent of the moral complexities of Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi (A SEPARATION, THE SALESMAN), Buyukatalay’s film scrutinises the overwhelmingly masculine spaces within a devout Islamic community. Oray (Zejhun Demirov) and his wife Burcu (Deniz Orta) are forced to separate after a heated row sees the devout young Muslim male initiate Islamic divorce proceedings through his impetuous utterance of the word ‘Talaq’ three times. In consultation with his Imam, the couple are forced to separate for three months, as outlined in Islamic law.

Oray leaves the family home in Hagen and relocates to the nearby city of Cologne, where he quickly finds himself at the centre of a new community, led by Imam Bilal (Cem Goktas), that interprets Islam slightly differently. Buyukatalay’s film isn’t concerned with easily concocted dramatic moments, it is rather a ruminative account of a relationship in crisis under the pressures of faith. Featuring exceptional performances throughout it is a film that asks difficult questions without straightforward answers. Oray and Burcu clearly care for each other intensely, but how do you accommodate human love and religious devotion? / Reviewed by Rohan Berry Crickmar
