INTRODUCTION
We're working with local orchardists across Stockport to help plant, restore and celebrate fruit trees in our communities. This summer, we're continuing our partnership with The Friends of Abney Hall to bring new life to the comunity orchards on site.
Over the last couple of years, we’ve helped restore the apple and pear orchard near the café, and it's now looking fantastic thanks to the volunteers and the Stockport Parks team who continue the work all year round.
In the morning, we’ll be giving these trees a much-needed summer prune. Then in the afternoon, we’ll start work on the overgrown stone fruit orchard to help make it more accessible and better used in the future.
If you're local to Abney Hall, The Friends of Abney Hall are always on the lookout for new members. There will be someone from the group with us on the day if you’d like to find out more or get involved. It’s a great way to volunteer locally and support biodiversity and community access to nature on your doorstep.
Already a Friend of Abney Hall?
If you're already a member of The Friends of Abney Hall Park, we’ve saved 8 places especially for your team. Look out for the dedicated ticket option.
New to This? Become an Orchard Apprentice
An Orchard Apprentice is anyone who wants to learn how to care for fruit trees, whether you're just starting out or already have some experience. It’s a hands-on way to build practical skills like pruning, pest management and tree care, with support from experienced growers. You'll have the chance to work in community orchards and, if you're interested, at our commercial sites too.
Whether you’re thinking about a career in horticulture or simply want to care for your own trees more confidently, this is a great place to start.
At This Session
You’ll learn how to summer prune heritage fruit trees (apples, pears and stone fruits) and how to identify and manage common pests and diseases. These are practical skills you can use at home, share with others, or take back to your own community projects.
All tools are provided, including professional equipment from trusted brands like Niwaki, Silky and Opinel. You’re welcome to bring your own gardening gloves and clean secateurs if you have them. A full safety briefing will be given before we start, and we have a small number of left-handed tools available too.
Please check the weather forecast and dress for a full day outdoors.
REFRESHMENTS
Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided. Let us know if you have any dietary needs.
VENUE / PARKING / MEETING POINT
We’ll meet in the car park at Abney Hall Café (SK8 2BD) and walk over to the orchard together, setting off promptly at 10am.
