Press Release

September 16, 2016

Oren Haskins at TAKK, Northern Quarter, Manchester

TAKK a café in Manchester’s Northern Quarter modelled on Icelandic coffee shops is known for hosting art by local Manchester based artists. Running from October 6th to November 17th 2016,TAKK will be showcasing the work of Illustrator and character designer, Oren Haskins.

Haskins is a self taught British illustrator now based in Manchester. Although he has an international client list he is best known for his highly original personal work, an example of which is featured in the 2016 edition of the ‘3x3’ illustration annual.

The show at TAKK will feature the original lead character designs (father and daughter) for ‘Pearl’ a short movie produced by Google’s Spotlight Stories division to showcase their multi-platform VR technology

“Best Cinematic VR: Pearl”

“…the short films were a natural fit for the medium, and Pearl is a particularly good one. It’s a poignant animated story about growing up, settling down, aging, and passing on the things you love to a new generation, all set in a boxy ‘80s car named Pearl. Less abstractly, it’s also a simple but kinetically animated music video for a wistful folk-pop song by songwriters Alexis Harte and JJ Wiesler, written specifically for the experience. Though Pearl’s director compares it to The Giving Tree, there’s little of that book’s bitterness and ambiguity. It might be the closest I got to crying at Tribeca, but only in a good way.”

Haskins’ characters, which span a wide arc from super human heroic Samurai to whimsical dream like inhabitants of misty forests, are characterised by a rich palette of colour, strong draughtsmanship, a fertile imagination and a tender hearted exploration of human connection within the context of natural and urban environments.

Oren Haskins was chosen by Apple as one of the artists to demonstrate the iPad Pro running ProCreate software at the new flagship Apple Store in San Francisco’s Union Square earlier this year. Most of the work in the show was created digitally using Photoshop or Procreate, the latter running on iPad Pro.

Haskins’ is currently working on his first children’s book and a series of videos about fellow artists. He is a keen photographer and a selection of his still images will form part of this show. He shoots both stills and video with a Panasonic Lumix GH4.

The exhibition will showcase a mixture of Oren Haskins personal and commercial art and at the opening Google Spotlight Stories will be demonstrating the movie ‘Pearl’ with VR headsets.
