Description

Towards A Journey’s End, The Music Of Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707)

This Recital by Chapel Organist Marilyn Harper, is almost the end of her two - year journey to learn all the organ works of Bach’s great predecessor, Buxtehude. Organist at St Mary’s Church in Lubeck, Buxtehude was visited by Handel, Bach and Mattheson in the immediate years before his death. His fame as both organist and composer had spread well beyond the confines of the city, and a pilgrimage of 200 miles was made on foot in Bach’s case, to both pay respects to, and to learn from, the famous master. Bach’s music attracts far more attention than his predecessor and because it shows many influences of Italy, where opera, vocal, chamber and instrumental musical styles were developing fast, some organists are puzzled that it doesn’t sound like Bach at all.
