An ILM Endorsed introductory programme for HR & L&D practitioners wishing to broaden their practice to include organisational development

You must be available to attend all 4 sessions. The training is held on Zoom and will be a mix of theory and practise, it is an interactive programme and we encourage the use of camera and headset.


This ILM Endorsed short course has two primary aims:

1. To enable HR and L&D practitioners to broaden their knowledge and understanding of organisation development and be able to apply new tools and techniques.

2. Enable practitioners to have a broader and more influential role, increasing their impact and influence.


By the end of the course participants will:

1. Understand what OD is and how to apply the principles which will broaden their

2. Understand how to apply tools and techniques to assess organisational effectiveness.

3. Understand and be able to apply models which assess the main components of effective organisational culture in their own context.

4. Understand how to develop communication and behaviour change strategies.

5. Develop an action plan for their own CPD and priorities for implementation in their own organisation.

Course content

• Organisational Development and the role of the HR/L&D practitioner.

• Managing the OD process

• Understanding what makes a good and bad organisational strategy

• The VRIN framework and its application

• Theories and models of organisational change

• Strategies for implementing change

• The role of the OD practitioner in developing leaders and building effective teams

• Understanding and assessing culture change

Applying a model of behaviour change

Home Learning & Assignment

After each session you will be given a home learning task which takes approximately an hour to complete. Following the workshops, you are invited to complete a short assignment with the option between a theory or practical based piece. On successful completion of the assignment you will receive a Certificate from ILM to recognise your work.

Shelagh O’Leary

Shelagh has over 25 years’ experience as a human resource development professional having worked in local government, the criminal justice sector and more recently the National Health Service. She has been instrumental in the development of HR strategy, organisational development, leadership development, talent management and the delivery of training and education, nationally and internationally.

She is an executive coach and has specialised as a career coach with a wide range of clients in the public and private sector. Shelagh has operated at board level having been a member of Skills for Justice, and is a member of the CIPD membership and CPD committee. She is also a member of the Career Development Institute, the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and the Institute of Directors.
