Description

Books & Books, Coral Gables welcomes Orlando Ortega-Medina to the store. He will be in conversation with TV personality Chef Pepin to discuss his collection of short stories, Jerusalem Ablaze: Stories of Love and Other Obsessions.

In Ortega-Medina’s debut short story collection, characters are consumed by their fascinations with sex, death, and inescapable fate. Already receiving high acclaim, Jerusalem Ablaze was shortlisted for the Polari First Book Prize of 2017, an annual award given to a writer whose first book explores the LGBT experience, whether in poetry, prose, fiction or non-fiction.

Ortega-Medina’s tales are predominantly somber and often dabble in the macabre. His prose is elegant and potent throughout with these stylish, sincere tales that go to dark, sometimes-uncomfortable places.

Orlando Ortega-Medina was born in California and is of Judeo-Spanish descent via Cuba. He studied English Literature at UCLA and has a Juris Doctor law degree from Southwestern University School of Law. Orlando is now a British citizen and lives in London, where he practices US immigration law. Orlando has just completed work on his follow-up novel.

Chef Pepin was born in Matanzas, Cuba. He moved to the US at age 12; growing up, he began a series of food-related jobs working as a cook at a marina and at a convenience store. In 1988, he joined Univision and is currently featured on an ongoing cooking segment on Despierta América. He also has a cooking show on the MGM Networks Latin America and makes regular appearances on Miami’s WPBT-2’s magazine show, New Florida. His mass appeal took his brand off-camera to become a true personality with celebrity status in the national Latino community from LA to NY. Pepin is the author of the Spanish-language Latin cookbook, Cooking With Chef Pepín (ISBN 978-0941010153).
