Leaving Coolings we will make our way to our first venue of the trip, the world famous and award winning Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire. Sir Harold was a renowned plantsman and nurseryman whose business interests still run today as a specialist wholesale nursery and a chain of garden centres.
In 1977 Sir Harold left the Gardens under the sole trusteeship of Hampshire County Council. It is now run as a charity under the remit of horticulture, conservation, education and recreation. Among its outstanding features are the splendour of the seasonal planting displays set in 180 acres.
From here we go on to catch a ferry to the Isle of Wight and then on to our hotel, the four star Lakeside Park Hotel and Spa, where we will enjoy our evening meal at the luxurious hotel restaurant.
After a leisurely breakfast, we leave for Osborne House.
Osborne House was built between 1845 and 1851 to provide Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with a private family home. It was built in the Italianate style in order to fit its setting on an island whose temperate climate and panoramic views over the Solent reminded Prince Albert of the Bay of Naples.
The 19th-century gardens and estate eventually covered more than 2,000 acres (800 hectares) but now extends to a more modest 354 acres (143 hectares) and includes formal terraces with statuary, a walled garden and extensive parkland.
Afterwards we will return to the coach for a tour of the island and stop in Shanklin for a while to have dinner at your leisure before returning to our hotel for the night.
We begin the day with a return to the mainland by ferry and then proceed to the less well known garden of .
This elegant country manor and tranquil garden sit so harmoniously within the landscape that one cannot exist without the other.
The house was lovingly rebuilt by its last owner, Ralph Dutton, after a catastrophic fire in 1960. Enjoy the beautifully proportioned rooms which house his exquisite collection of ceramics and art, each window offering undisturbed views to the tranquil countryside beyond.
Beautifully manicured lawns lead the eye down avenues of sculptured topiary, past borders full of the heady scent of roses, to breathtaking views across the South Downs
Finally, we take our leave for a relaxing return to Coolings.
