Title: “The Foundation of Taunton and Somerset Hospital (1812)”
Speaker: Mike Davidson, FRCS, DHMSA
M.J.C.Davidson is a semi-retired Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who worked for at the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, the successor of the hospital in the title of his lecture.
In 1809 Taunton was a County town with a population of approximately 7,000 within three years the local community had raised the money to build and support a voluntary hospital. He will discuss who were the driving forces behind the project, in particular how they used local newspapers and social networks of the Church, Freemasons etc. Was this community’s effort typical of the founding voluntary hospitals of the period?
