Event description

Description

The OUDS New Writing Festival is an annual showcase of the most exciting new writing emerging from Oxford University. Each year sees a shortlist of plays and single scenes performed across the city - and the best Radio Play broadcast - during a week in February.

The Opening Gala at Blackwell's kicks off the week with an evening of varied scenes and short plays, and the presence of professional judges allows for exciting development opportunities for these young writers. This year the 'Blackwell’s Prize for Best Single Scene' will be launched and awarded to one of our finalists, chosen by playwright and novelist Barney Norris.

Barney Norris was born in Sussex in 1987, and grew up in Salisbury. Upon leaving university he founded the theatre company Up In Arms. He won the Critics' Circle and Offwestend Awards for Most Promising Playwright for his debut full-length play Visitors. He is the Martin Esslin Playwright in Residence at Keble College, Oxford. He is also the author of two novels.

Finalists for this year's 'Blackwell's Prize for Best Single Scene' are:

‘An Apology for an Aspiring Patroclus’. Two women. They might appear different, but as they talk sex, drugs and literature, the distinction between them becomes less and less certain.

‘Ask Away’. Two old school friends discuss life's mundanities. But the longer the talk, the more it seems there could be a darker, depressive reality lurking beneath the surface?.

Untitled 1. Johnny and Clarence. A ‘Life Sciences’ class. A teacher and pupil discuss politics and literature.

Untitled 2. Could a late night argument between husband and wife leave their marriage in ruins?

Doors will open at 6.45pm. There will be a bar open throughout the event.
