Topic: ‘Our South Africa Experience’: Sharing learning from the ‘Pathways to Resilience’ Conference - HeadStart Blackpool

Date: Friday 29 September 2017

Time: 1.15 for 1.30-3.00pm

Venue: The Solaris Centre, New South Promenade, Blackpool FY4 1RW

Session Summary: Come along to our Resilience Forum to hear all about our experience in South Africa. The Forum will show highlights from the Pathways International Resilience Conference which we were fortunate to attend. We will show you our presentation about Blackpool and what fantastic work HeadStart is doing highlighting our 6 Fundamentals.

You will be able to see the amazing work that both Josh and Ollie did interviewing academics and looking into what work around resilience is being carried out around the world. We will also talk about our experience when visiting a local community and how they deal with adversity. We have lots of photos, clips, learning to share, demonstrating our own resilience and much more. It will be a FUN Resilience Forum, not to be missed!

Biography:

Sharon Butler – HeadStart Advanced Practitioner: I have been involved with Headstart since the pilot in 2014 and I am very passionate about the work we are doing in Blackpool. I am a Blackpool girl, born and bred, and want to see Blackpool become a more resilient community. I have a vast range of experience over the last 25 years working with young people and families through offending behaviours, residential children’s homes and family support.

Lisa Mills – HeadStart Risky Behaviour Trainer: I joined the Headstart Team in 2016 after it was successful in securing the Big Lottery Funding. My role is to deliver training to professionals, parents and carers to increase their knowledge around resilience and help them identify earlier if a young person needs a little helping hand. I have worked with Blackpool children and families for over 25 years and I am very passionate about working alongside these families to help them overcome adversity and build their resilience.

Oliver Gibbs – Peer Sessional Worker for Headstart: I've been involved since the beginning of HeadStart nearly, and am very passionate about the way young people should be able to access support in Blackpool. I joined HeadStart to be able to make a difference to the way young people grow up in Blackpool, and to enable them to have better services and options to what I had when growing up. I feel very strongly about the work that HeadStart are doing and I know that it is making a big impact on the lives of many.

Josh Thompson – Apprentice youth engagement worker for HeadStart. I have been in post for around two and a half months, however I have been part of HeadStart’s YPEG ‘Young People’s Executive Group’ for around two and a half years. I am looking forward to working with the rest of the team and enjoy working as part of it. Born in Blackpool, grew up in Blackpool but with quite a Scottish accent.
