Event description
Screening of two short films followed by a performance.

About this Event

Both of the films included in this screening tell a story of the varied experiences of Africans living within the continent and Diaspora. They show the use of creativity as a weapon of and for resilience within art forms like music, dance and spoken word.

Scottish poet Courtney Stoddart will perform a new work that brings the themes felt throughout the films even further to life.

Films included in this programme are:

EUPHORIA

Robert - Jonathan Koeyers | Belgium 2018 | Dutch, English, French and Romanian with English subtitles | 24m | 15

This experimental Afrofuturist musical short follows five individuals from the Africa diaspora who are trying to survive through Europe’s steep decline. With Africa cut off from the world by a mysterious forcefield, Europe is lost without the natural resources and cheap labour it needs to prosper. The actors sing to Africa, sing to each other, and sing to themselves in ways that create solidarity and community in an alienating society.

THE SOUND OF MASKS

Sara CF De Gouveia | Mozambique 2018 | Portuguese with English subtitles | 1h | 15

Mapiko dancer Atanásio Nyusi tells Mozambique’s past and present through dance and storytelling. The documentary explores themes of identity, and loss of identity, through the memories and traces left by colonisation. Nyusi shows us the necessity of movement and dance in our lives, as well as keeping our cultures and traditions alive.
