Event description
The third annual Our Voice Parents’ Conference on Tuesday 5th & Wednesday 6th February, for parents and carers of children with SEND.

About this Event

This will be Our Voice's third annual conference. The event has been designed to take into account the feedback from our 2018 conference:

Two-day event: We have been fortunate to secure funding to enable us to hold the conference over two days so that we will have plenty of time for each session, and for informal discussions over coffee and lunch. Please book to attend day 2 separately: here.

Updates from SEND Heads: We will have short updates from each of the Heads of Departments responsible for SEND services in Enfield (Social Care, Short Breaks, Moving on, Integrated Learning Disabilities Service, Education, Health, Educational Psychology and Emotional Well-being Service, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and Transport). These will be short presentations focusing on new developments.

Q&A: The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session where you will have the opportunity to ask the panel of SEND Heads questions.

Workshops: We have a choice of 4 different workshops each lasting an hour, chosen following a survey of our members.

One-to-one sessions: We will again be offering the opportunity for parents and carers to book one or more 15-minute one-to-one sessions with professionals, to discuss specific questions and concerns regarding their child.

SEND Funding discussion with Council Leader: we are delighted that the new Leader of Enfield Council, Councillor Nesil Caliskan has agreed to come along to the second day of our conference (6th February) to discuss her plans for SEND funding, and to hear your views. This is a unique opportunity to learn about plans for spending in the Enfield area, and to talk about the impact of cuts in SEND funding on your family. Please book to attend day 2 separately: here.

Workshop options

12 - 1 :

EITHER: Positive Behaviour Support This workshop looks at how parents can use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) - a set of research-based strategies which aim to increase quality of life, happiness, wellbeing and decrease concerning behaviours that can challenge everyone. By trying to understand the meaning of the behaviour we can be mindful of the new skills we teach, make supportive changes in a person's environment and modify our own actions, so we may meet their needs.

OR: Finding SEND Information (the ‘Local Offer’) This workshop will explore how to find out information about services and support available for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, in the Enfield area. We will explore how to navigate your way around the complex information available and how to use the Enfield ‘Local Offer’ - a one-stop-shop that aims to cover everything you need to know. You will have an opportunity to give your input on what information you would like to see included, and whether the layout works for you.

1.30 - 2.30

EITHER: Speech and Language This workshop with the Enfield Speech and Language team will look at tools to support children who have difficulties with communication, and how parents can use different tools such as ‘Talking Mats’ to enable their children to voice their wishes and aspirations.

OR: Moving on This session is aimed at the parents of young people aged 14 and over and aims to explore the ways in which you can support your young person through the transition, and the support available to you. We will look at some of the issues associated with moving towards adulthood and increasing independence, such as finding employment.
