Event description
Discover the real wild night life of Ouseburn on an urban Bat Safari!

About this Event

A fascinating insight into Ouseburn's nocturnal neighbours!

Join Wild Intrigue on this popular urban safari to discover some truly intriguing creatures of the night in Newcastle’s lively hub, Ouseburn.

Find out all about Britain’s impressive diversity of bats before heading off, with bat detectors in hand, to track bats down as they emerge from their roosts and forage. Bat detectors bring a whole new level to spying on bats, allowing you to eavesdrop on their ultrasound clicks, slaps and pops as they hunt for ‘breakfast’ and communicate with each other. You will have use of Magenta 4 detectors on the night, perfect for tuning in and turning UP ‘bat chat’.

Perhaps you will discover Common Pipistrelles hunting, which weigh as little as a 20 pence coin, or Daubentons bats trawling insects over the River Tyne after sunset.

Associated with vampires and all things spooky, bats suffer from a bad rep across the world. We’re not havin’ that! Bats have cruised our skies for tens of millions of years – way before the first human took the first step. So join us to find out all about the bizarre anatomy and curious ecology of some of our longest-evolved mammals, right here in Ouseburn.

FAQ's

Can children join this Mini Exped?

This Mini Exped is suitable for all ages. Wild Intrigue think it's amazing that children are intrigued by the fascinating world of bats so under 18’s are very welcome to join under supervision of a responsible, paying adult. Children aged 7 and over are able to enjoy and appreciate bat ecology most, but little ones (and big ones) get equally as excited.

What is the terrain like?

The walk will take place on footpaths, and will follow the riverside path within Ouseburn, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please note that the route includes walking up concrete steps.

Are dogs allowed on this Mini Exped?

Sorry but pups aren't allowed on this walk, please get in touch with Wild Intrigue at info@wildintrigue.co.uk if you have any queries about this.

Where is the meeting place?

We will meet at the Spiller's Car Park which neighbours the Cycle Hub, which can be found at: the Cycle Hub, Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 1BU.

This is a free parking area. Please arrive around ten minutes before the start time of the event.

Cancellations and refunds

Bats aren't particularly fussy creatures and are active every night throughout summer, however heavy rain and strong winds would reduce bat activity, and would also make for an unpleasant midsummer stroll. If we need to cancel the event we will inform you a day in advance, and you will be refunded your full amount.

You will also be made aware of our rescheduled date in advance of it going public.

If you wish to cancel your booking with us, you may request a refund up to 7 days before the Bat Safari date and time.

How can I get in touch with you?

If you have any questions about Ouseburn Bat Safaris or other Wild Intrigue Mini Expeds, get in touch at info@wildintrigue.co.uk.
