Event description

Description

Learn from the best: Out of Joint presents a series of masterclasses with brilliant and successful playwrights. All proceeds from these classes will support The Andrea Project, our new initiative to discover and inspire the next generation of playwrights. By booking your place, you help us keep the project entirely free so that nobody misses out for financial reasons.

THIS EVENING'S WRITER: CHRIS BUSH

Chris wrote the recent The Assassination of Katie Hopkins for Theatr Clwyd and the upcoming new version of Pericles at the National Theatre as well the award-winning musical satire Tony! The Blair Musical (York Theatre Royal and tour) and its follow up Blair of Arabia. She has written new plays for both NT Connections and Sheffield Young People's Theatre, and the ambitious Sheffield Mysteries. Chris is teaches playwriting for the National Theatre. She is under commission to Out of Joint. (Please note: this evening's masterclass was originally to be given by Elinor Cook. We are hugely grateful to Chris for stepping in).

THE MASTERCLASS

For writers at any level and anybody interested in writing and theatre. Spend an evening with a successful writer and find out what makes them tick. Learn their methods, look at some basic principles of writing, and get some practical top tips.

THE CAUSE

All money raised will go towards funding ‘The Andrea Project’ – an education project inspired by Andrea Dunbar, the writer of Rita, Sue and Bob Too. She lived her entire life in poverty and had her first play produced at the Royal Court while she was living at a women’s refuge at the age of 18. Andrea had no further education, and no background in the arts.

The Andrea Project is a direct response to the question: would we find Andrea today? It provides young people with a free playwriting course led by a professional writer, and the opportunity to have their own short play performed in a theatre by professional actors. We hope to give budding writers, whatever their background, both the skills and the ambition to be playwrights and to show us the world through their eyes.

The project was piloted last year, and the participants are all determined to keep writing. Learn more here.
