Event description

Are you aged 18-26 and keen to enjoy Scotland’s amazing landscapes on foot?

Our free Out There Award will help kick-start your journey into the outdoors, while helping you meet people, boost your CV and build your confidence along the way.

The award is split over three non-consecutive days, each with a different focus: outdoor skills, a challenging walk and volunteering.

Each day is designed to help break down the barriers that sadly stop many young adults from enjoying the outdoors – while helping you meet a new network of like-minded people. Click here for details of the daily itineraries.

Everyone who completes the three elements of the Out There Award will receive:

  • A full year of Ramblers membership, worth up to £35.85
  • A Ramblers Scotland neck buff
  • An Out There Award Certificate
  • A Ramblers Scotland tote bag
  • And 1,000 Young Scot Reward points!

You’ll also unlock access to Ramblers Scotland’s five young walking groups, made up of friendly people who love walking, social events and getting out there.

We’ve already enjoyed brilliant days with enthusiastic young adults in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

Edinburgh programme

Here’s what to expect during the three days of your Out There Award...

This is a fun chance to pick up valuable outdoor skills in a friendly environment, while also getting to know your fellow Out There Award participants.

Rather than sitting and listening to us speak, we’ll run fun group activities that help you learn about the important skills needed to safely enjoy great days outdoors in Scotland.

We’ll cover topics in the morning including:

  • Where to walk in Scotland
  • Outdoor equipment and clothing
  • What food and drink to carry
  • Navigation skills
  • How to plan a walk

Then we’ll all head outdoors and gradually put these skills into practice on a gentle walk planned and led by you and your fellow participants.

The activities are designed to prepare you for the next exciting award day.

  • Day two: a challenging walk - Saturday 9th November - TBC

Using everything we learned on the skills day, the group will select an appropriate challenging walk. This could be a long-distance route, a scenic coastal trail or an iconic mountain. We'll be either car-pooling or using a minibus to reach the location.

In the company of a trained Ramblers walk leader, we will work as a team to complete this challenge.

Previous Out There Award groups have tackled long distance walks along the West Highland Way and at the Falls of Clyde, while some have even bagged their first Munros in the Cairngorms.

Volunteering is the lifeblood of the Ramblers, and we want our Out There Award groups to get the chance to give something back to Scotland’s great outdoors.

We'll be heading to the Scottish Borders to work with the Borders Forest Trust; helping them conserve, restore and manage native woodlands. We’ll roll up our sleeves and get stuck into a volunteer activity that we can be proud of completing at the end of the day. Again, we'll either car-pool or use a minibus to reach the location.

However, it's not just hard work! Our groups often find this the most rewarding day of the scheme, as it’s a chance to work together on great projects, with interesting people, in stunning locations.

Examples of past volunteering sessions includes working with the Mountains and the People charity to improve the paths on the Cobbler near Arrochar. Participants have also planted native trees with the Borders Forest Trust and helped protected Scotland’s wild places.

Other options include taking your first steps towards leading a group by attending Ramblers Scotland Walk Leadership Training.

By the end of the three days we hope you will have learned new skills, challenged yourself, increased your employability, had fun and made friends.

Most importantly, we want you to feel confident and inspired to continue your journey #OutThere in Scotland.

By applying to be a part of the Out There Award, you also are consenting to The Ramblers contacting you by email to share information about The Ramblers. This information will include facts about the work we do, information about future award events, the benefits of being a member of the Ramblers and how to become a member. We may also communicate with you to promote the work we do as a charity. We will keep you up to date with our news, campaigns, events and fundraising activities. We will also contact you with a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the award to track awardee development and satisfaction.

Please be assured that The Ramblers will do everything to ensure that the personal information you provide us with will remain secure. We will never sell your personal data.
