Sally Potter's dazzling interpretation of Virginia Woolf's novel follows the fortunes of a young aristocrat from 1600 to the present day, as he changes sex and discards his biological and cultural destiny along the way.
Tilda Swinton, in one of her signature roles as the titular, androgynous lead, heads an eccentric cast encompassing such diverse figures as Billy Zane and Quentin Crisp. It's also the film which saw Sally Potter emerge f rom an avant-garde notoriety into mainstream recognition, with a lavishly designed spectacle that earned numerous awards and two Oscar nominations.
Dr Jo Winning, Reader in Modern Literature & Critical Theory, Birkbeck, will present the film and hold a short discussion afterwards.
