This one-day short course aims to provide the basics on the steps of outbreaks investigation including determining if an outbreak exists, who should be involved in the investigation, how to control it, and how to communicate the findings of the investigation to the officials and the public.

Learning outcomes:

  • List reasons for investigating reported outbreaks
  • Differentiate and define cluster, outbreak, and epidemic
  • List the factors involved in the determination of an epidemic
  • Following information of an “outbreak of disease”, list the steps of an investigation of and control of outbreaks of disease


Outline syllabus:


It is designed to help the participants to develop an understanding of how to plan and implement an outbreak investigation, using an appropriate case study. 


Outline syllabus follows: 

1. Introduction to Investigating an Outbreak:

- Uncovering outbreaks

- Deciding whether to investigate a possible outbreak

- Control/prevention

- Public concerns

2. Steps of an Outbreak Investigation:

- Prepare for field work

- Establish the existence of an outbreak

- Verify the diagnosis

- Define and identify cases (establish a case definition, identify and count cases)

- Implement control and prevention measures

- Communicate findings

3. A Case study of an outbreak of a disease (adapted for different organisations/settings) 

After reading this case study and answering all questions, a participant will be able to:

• Define an epidemic, an outbreak, and a cluster

• Create and understand the uses of a case definition

• Draw an epidemic curve

• Calculate food-specific attack rates

 • List the steps in investigating an acute outbreak

Introduction to the concept of an outbreak and why they can present an important challenge to the public’s health.  Update on Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Dengue.
