(60 minute workshop, 60 minute exhibition & gallery visit)

In this handson, experimental workshop, pupils will use real laboratory techniques from Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre to track the outbreak of an infectious, parasitic disease.

They will use micropipettes and other lab equipment to perform a mock diagnostic test, supported by scientists from The Roslin Institute and Edinburgh Infectious Diseases. Pupils will work as a group to interpret their results and agree on a recommended course of action.

The session l also covers some of the science behind disease diagnosis and how parasitic diseases can spread between animals and humans, and gives pupils the opportunity to meet and interact with professional scientists who are working on infectious diseases.

Class A

12:30–13:00 – Lunch (space set aside in lunchroom for packed lunches)

This event is run in partnership with the University of Edinburgh’s Roslin Institute, Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre and Edinburgh Infectious Diseases.

Classes must be accompanied by a teacher.

By reserving 1 timeslot, you can bring up to 24 pupils. If you are bringing less than 24, please let us know on the booking form and we may combine with a small class from a different school.


Travel Subsidy

The University of Edinburgh is able to provide some financial support towards travel expenses for schools attending this workshop. This is specifically targeted at state schools in deprived areas, where more than 45% of pupils are in the lowest 20% SIMD category. The support would be up to a max of £200 per school. This is available on a first come, first served basis. Please enquire upon booking for further information.
