Course Content/Objectives

This CPD session aims to train teachers in the use of the excellent resources found at Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre and Cruickshank Botanic Garden. Participation in this pond-dipping workshop will enable teachers to deliver activities that increase the child’s awareness and appreciation of the diversity and importance of freshwater invertebrates and their food chains.     Teachers will also develop confidence in identifying mini-beasts from aquatic environments and in leading outdoor learning sessions.

Delivery of ‘Pond Dipping sessions will engage the pupil’s observation skills, increase their awareness and understanding of different adaptations and habitats. Self-led visits can be booked following the CPD, but within a specific time frame. CfE outcomes include:, SCN 2-01a, SCN 2-02a, SCN2 -14a

Outcomes sought

Completion of this session will enable teachers to use Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre and Cruickshank Botanic Gardens to confidently deliver science and environmental subjects to their classes through interactive and outdoor learning whilst:

  • enhancing their own knowledge and understanding of science, biodiversity and sustainability at the same time as developing appropriate skills and resources.
  • increasing scientific literacy, creating greater curiosity and developing understanding of the environment and the relevance of science
  • developing strategies to deliver complex science and environmental issues in the classroom
