Explore the science of mind-body connection through mindful movement, qigong, and yoga!


The benefits of yoga for health and well-being have been known for generations, yet science is only beginning to catch up. Recent years have seen a surge of research exploring the effects of yoga’s core tenets – mindful, controlled movement and breath – on mood, stress and anxiety levels, bodily awareness, and even attention, chronic pain, or heart rate variability. What yogis knew for generations has been true all along: yoga carries a host of positive benefits for body and mind.

In this workshop, we will marry theory with practice to explore the science behind the mind-body connection and how it can be positively affected by mindful, controlled movement and breath.

Join us for practical sessions with Brighton’s own yoga teacher Alexa Garside, incorporating yoga, qigong (a calmer form of exercise combining movement, breath and meditation) and breathing techniques, and find out about the science of how they can affect your body and mind.

Welcome & introduction


11-12:00

Beginner session:

Learn how to use breath and movement to improve your all-round well-being and health.

Ideally suited for beginners, those who would like to experience yoga for the first time, or those who prefer a lighter form of exercise.


12-13:00

Lunch & talk

The science of mindful movement and breath: A talk and discusssion between senior yoga teacher and Sussex University cognitive psychology researcher. Audience participation welcome!


13-14:00

Intermediate & advanced session:

Practice mindful breathing and movement to cope with life’s challenges

Ideally suited for those who would enjoy a more challenging session.

Can I take part in both sessions?

Absolutely! You are welcome to take part in both even if you sign up just for one.


Should I bring anything?

There is no need. We will be practicing on the grass. Feel free to bring your yoga mat if you prefer.


What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing, suitable for exercise.


What if it rains?

In case of rain, we will reschedule the event. All information will be posted here and on the event page.
