Start point: Hawkshead LDNP car park
Length: 10.5 km (6.5 miles) with 345 m (1132 ft) of ascent
Time: 5 .5 hours (approx)
Grade: 5 (see grade description below)
A walk which starts through fields from Hawkshead followed by a climb to the summit of Latterbarrow (245m), one of Wainwright's Outlying Fells, with a superb view of Windermere (weather permitting). The steep descent is through forest to the lakeshore and then to Wray Castle, a Victorian folly, now owned by the National Trust. The return route is along a bridleway which passes Blelham Tarn which is a National Nature Reserve.
Paths are generally good but there is a short section at the top of Latterbarrow that is rocky and can be slippery when wet. There are also short sections on quiet lanes.
Grade 5 walks are our most challenging full day walks which involve going onto the fell summits. These walks require a good level of fitness and full walking kit appropriate for the weather conditions. Some people may find walking poles useful. You may encounter sustained climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces can be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, irregular steps, stiles or narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
