Event description

Description

This event is a Joint Biosciences Learning and Teaching Workshop sponsored by the Royal Society of Biology and part of the HUBS/HUCBMS series 2018/19.

The one-day workshop will examine chemistry teaching challenges in biomedical and bioscience programmes in the UK and focus on overcoming disciplinary and technological barriers to improve chemistry teaching in bioscience and biomedical science (BMS) programmes. Aimed at instructors and lecturers in HE, this workshop will identify challenges and areas where delegates could work together to strengthen chemistry teaching across BMS and bioscience programmes. The dissonance between cross-discipline perspectives, bottom-up vs. top-down, in teaching chemistry will be broached as the area where improvements may lie.

Hands-on sessions will share approaches used at Bradford, where augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are used to improve cross-disciplinary teaching of chemistry and biology. Delegates will be shown how using AR and VR can convey chemistry in a more accessible way and will be given an opportunity to create their own material.

These following afternoon sessions will be led by chemistry lecturers and a mobile IT specialist:

If they can see it, we can teach it: Hands-on tutorial to create AR content using open source software and 3D models to highlight the chemistry within biomolecules to help students overcome the challenge of linking chemistry to biomolecular structure and function.

Pedagogy Alchemy: Examination of differences between the teaching pedagogy of a chemist teaching chemistry and that of non-chemists.

The Art of The Possible: Hands-on interactive opportunity to use high-end VR and AR technologies to explore the subject of chemistry. Will include use of a Microsoft Hololens to walk around a virus molecule and use a HTC Vive to tie a knot in a small protein.

A full programme will be sent out over email along with joining instructions post-registration.
