Event description

Description

Is your school doing all it can to engage parents in order to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people? Would you like help with developing your parent council to fully harness the energy and commitment that parents can bring to support their children's education and contribute to the progress of the school?

Join us for a morning workshop on 'Overcoming Barriers to Engage All Parents' or an afternoon workshop on 'Developing your Parent Council' - or take advantage of our special discount and attend both workshops with lunch included.

Overcoming Barriers to Engage All Parents (9.00 - 12.30)

Children do better across a range of measures when their parents are involved in their education. Yet many schools struggle to engage parents, particularly those they most want to reach. This interactive workshop will help those who feel they've tried everything but are still battling to engage 'harder to reach' parents. You will hear imaginative and powerful ideas on:

  • reaching out to disengaged families to build parental support for learning
  • overcoming the barriers to parental involvement
  • revamping your school ethos
  • encouraging positive behaviour
  • the prime opportunities to make a difference
  • training your staff to work effectively with parents.

Developing your Parent Council (13.00 - 16.30)

Parental involvement is a key lever for school improvement and having a genuine partnership with parents will ensure that they feel valued and that children are supported to achieve their best. At this workshop we will discuss strategies to make sure that your parent council functions effectively and in the best interest of parents and the school. We will look at different models of parent councils, hear inspiring case studies from Scotland and further afield and discuss the key issues for parent councils to address. You will hear innovative and practical ideas on:

  • improving communication
  • removing barriers to parental participation
  • finding the right structure for your school
  • maintaining momentum
  • evaluating progress and assessing impact.
