Description

A workshop for professionals working with separating parents with Una Archer, Psychologist from Parenting after Separation

Una Archer is a psychologist who helps separated parents to soften the impact of the separation on their children and to resolve any emotional or behaviour issues that might have cropped up along the way. She provides one-to-one consultations to parents and families, hosts workshops for parents and professionals working with separated parents and runs termly parenting course Help your Child Thrive.

This is what Una says about the workshop that she will be running with Louisa Whitney at the offices of LKW Family Mediation in Dorking:

I believe that all separating parents set out to do what is best for their children, yet in reality it is sometimes easier said than done.

When two parents decide to separate it does not change their relationship overnight. The reasons that led them to this decision stay present in their relationship until they are looked into, death with, transformed, healed. Those same reasons can prevent them from co-parenting successfully.

  • Do you sometimes see that children are not being helped by how their parents are acting?
  • Do you wonder how you could support the parents to make more child-centred choices?
  • Would you like to know where to direct them to get help to break the cycles of behaviour they’re stuck in and focus on their children’s needs?

In this workshop, I will share three underlying causes I see most often in my practice that keep well meaning, deeply loving, hard working parents caught up in a conflict:

  • Parenting and co-parenting from a chronic fight/flight state
  • Their emotional separation is not complete and they are still trying to hold onto the other parent (often without even realising it)
  • They do not have clear co-parenting priorities

We will explore how using this understanding we can help separating parents to become more available to their children
