About this event

Arts • Craft

We're staying late at the Mills this Autumn to bring you the Overtime Art Club sessions! Come along for relaxed evenings of zine making, photography and more - all facilitated by local artists and inspired by our current exhibition Many Hands.

You're welcome to bring your own drinks to the session, we'll provide all the materials you'll need.

During this session, try your hand at the grassroots campaign methods seen in Many Hands. Inspired by the Zine Library in the exhibition, we'll use an age-old method of getting your message across. Quick, cheap and simple to self-publish, zine-making is a staple technique for self-expression.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to use this accessible medium in art and activism. Looking back on previous campaigns, we’ll reflect on how we can make change in our own communities today.

Explore a diversity of collage materials through cutting and sticking. Discover creative ways to get your message across. And learn simple bookbinding techniques to elevate your zine-making.

Suitable for ages 15+. No experience needed. Walk away with your own zine to photocopy and share!

Artist bio:

Abby Boon (she/her) is a local creative and founding member of local feminist creative collective ‘The Chica Coop’. They combine art and advocacy in projects like ‘The Leak: Private View’, currently on display in the Zine Library in Many Hands.

“The Leak began as a faux art exhibition staged in a damp, leaky bedroom in our shared rental house. It became this zine, which launched a campaign to raise awareness of poor-quality rental housing in our local area, encourage community organising, and fundraise for Leeds-based social housing charity Canopy Housing”.

A recent graduate from the University of Leeds, she has a background in creative and charitable volunteering, as well as creating campaigns in the cultural sector. In each, she aims to enact positive change in the arts, heritage and culture through collaborative, community-based work.
