Event description

Description

The Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) has been running a project examining Dynamic Thermal Ratings of Cables with Transmission Excellence Ltd (TX) and Southampton University. To date, research has:

  1. Identified a methodology for finding the optimum design that minimises the levelised cost of energy of a wind farm by exploiting the thermal inertia of the export cables and their environment.

  2. Compiled a set of thermal models of cables for use in these optimisation studies, and experimentally verified several of these models.

A full agenda will be circulated prior to the workshop but will include:

  • Cost minimisation through dynamic thermal rating of wind farm export cables.

  • Recommendations for the thermal modelling of export cables

  • Recommendations for obtaining input data in relation to the environmental conditions that affect cable temperature (e.g. soil thermal resistivity, wind speed or ambient temperature).

  • Recommendations for economic inputs required for the cost minimisation calculation.

  • Experimental verification of recommended thermal models.

Timings

  • 12:00 - 13:00 Lunch

  • 13:00 - 16:00 workshop

The Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA) is Carbon Trust's flagship collaborative RD&D programme. The joint initiative was set up between the Carbon Trust and nine offshore wind developers in 2008. The current phase involves nine offshore wind developers; these OWA partners account for 76% of Europe’s installed offshore wind capacity.
