Event description

Description

with Ven. Mary Reavey

Many people ignore, suppress or perhaps develop an unrealistic attitude towards death. When we do this, we push our awareness of death away as if it is some distant event that we don’t have to pay attention to. However, death will happen to us all and most of us will lose friends and loved ones along the way.

How we deal with death is an expression of our wisdom, courage and compassion. Preparing ourselves with the necessary knowledge will be of great help in our journey. Tibetan Buddhist nun Ven. Mary Reavey will help us to explore the Buddhist approach to death, highlighting the benefits of wisdom and the methods which can help us to embrace and own our own death.

You don’t need to be a Buddhist to join us, everyone is welcome! You will come away with practical information and tools that we can put to use straight away. During the workshop, there will be a combination of teaching, discussion, meditation and an opportunity to ask lots of questions!

About the Teacher:

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Mary was a nurse when she first encountered Buddhism at the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition’s mother monastery – Kopan – in Nepal in 1978. It was her love of adventure and trekking that led her to Kopan. Mary attended a month-long course taught by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa who emphasised the importance of meditation and taking complete responsibility for your own actions and their effects.

In 2001 Mary took ordination as a nun with Lama Zopa Rinpoche, then until 2012 taught meditation and Buddhist philosophy at Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds, Buddhist centres in Preston, Liverpool, and at Armley Prison, Dumfries Prison, Leeds General Infirmary, St. James’ Hospital and Wheatfields Hospice where she held regular meditation sessions. Over the years Ven Mary has undertaken and led many meditation retreats. She completed a one-year solitary retreat in 2014 and enjoys a 3-month yearly retreat since 2015. She continues to regularly teach at Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds, Land of Joy and in York. Ven. Mary Reavey is a fully ordained Bikshuni, a fully ordained female monastic in Buddhism.
