Owning Your Value in RS: A career workshop for underrepresented groups
Overview
A practical workshop to build clarity and career confidence for people from underrepresented groups who write research software.
Participants will leave with the ability to identify, articulate, and celebrate their unique contributions to the research environment. This awareness will support their careers in many ways — from identifying which projects align with their strengths to showcasing their skills in CVs, LinkedIn profiles, and funding applications.
This session is led by Kathryn Entwistle, a Professional Career Coach with over 20 years of experience. She has helped more than a thousand clients, from a very wide variety of roles and sectors, find the best way forward in their career and align their work with what matters most to them. She is very skilled in facilitating great career decisions.
Participant criteria:
- write software for research purposes as a PhD candidate, researcher, RSE, DTP or other similar role.
- from an underrepresented group in RSE/academia including, but not limited to, race, gender, social class, disability and sexuality.
About the Research Software Camp: Careers and Skills in Research Software
The Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) runs Research Software Camps (RSCs), which aim to improve coding literacy by providing attendees with tailored programmes consisting of online workshops; panel discussions; resources such as guides, articles, and videos; and one-to-one support around specific topics within research software. The RSC format prioritises entry-level training while also supporting the transition to intermediate skills.
This year’s Research Software Camp, Careers and Skills in Research Software, will be delivered over the course of two weeks as a multi-session event tailored for early-career professionals, recent graduates, and anyone looking to transition into research software roles. Through a combination of hands-on workshops and engaging panel discussions, attendees will gain a strong foundation in both the technical and professional competencies in research software.
