Anatomy of Malice: the conflict between the US Army psychiatrist and psychologist assigned to assess the Nazi defendants at the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal.
In 2016 eminent American psychiatrist Joel Dimsdale published Anatomy of Malice (Yale University Press). It is a well-researched account of the intense personal and professional conflict between Douglas Kelley, a very experienced psychiatrist, and Gustave Gilbert, an academic psychologist, as they interviewed the leading Nazi defendants on trial for their lives in the first Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal (1945-6)
Edinburgh-based psychiatrist and screenwriter Stephen Potts has optioned the screen rights and written a screenplay for a feature film dramatising the story. A US producer is attached and the script is now in development. His talk, which includes documentary footage, covers the true story of the trial, the roles Kelley and Gilbert played within it, and the conflict between them that remains unresolved.
