Oxford and the Victorian Church

Lecture by the Rev Prof William Whyte, St John’s College, Oxford

This lecture explores the profound impact of the Oxford Movement on the religious and architectural landscape of Victorian Oxford. The Rev Prof William Whyte will trace how this revival of High Church Anglicanism shaped not only theology and worship, but also the very fabric of the University and the city, resulting in the creation of some of the most extraordinary buildings of the period. The lecture will highlight how the work of some of the period's leading architects came to embody the ideals of the Movement, such as Butterfield’s seminal design for Keble College and G. G. Scott’s breathtaking chapel at Exeter College.

Part of the Victorian Society’s AGM weekend programme, this lecture offers an illuminating perspective on the intertwined history of faith, architecture and Oxford’s unique nineteenth-century heritage and legacy.

Please arrive from 5:45 pm for a 6 pm start. Enter Keble College via the Porter's Lodge.
