Our Annual Symposium is a celebration of the passion and commitment to cancer research that is shared across our community.

With approximately 300 people attending each year, it provides an opportunity for our members to network and build new collaborations.

The event provides an opportunity for our members to come together to attend a programme that showcases the breadth of activity across the Centre and features interdisciplinary partnerships supporting translational cancer research in Oxford.

Membership: The event is exclusive for Centre members only. If you are unsure if you're a member, or if you meet the criteria to be a member, you can submit a request here.

Programme:

Registration will be open from 08:30. Upon arrival, please go straight down the stairs - in front of you will see the café, we will be just to the left of this. Please go to the welcome desk to pick up your name badge and a copy of the day’s schedule.

We will also be running poster competitions. Please place an add-on ticket to register your interest and submit an abstract. Please note there will be a maximum of 45 spaces available and places will be given out on a 1st come 1st serve basis. Please see the abstract guidance below for further details, deadline of submission: Friday 14th February.

The event will close with the usual canapé and drinks networking reception - all attendees are welcome. Guest speakers, Centre Committee members, and fellow Centre members will be in attendance.

Brochure:

For sustainability reasons, we will not be printing our brochure for the 2025 symposium. There will be copies of the agenda displayed. You will be able to access the brochure via a QR code during the event.

Oxford attendee no-show % rates - CRUK item costings:

We have always kept the annual symposium a free event for our members. Over the last few years we have been monitoring our attendee numbers and have seen the rate of no-shows increase. This is a concern for us.

The events we run are funded with charitable money. On average, the annual symposium costs £25K with a 30% dropout rate each year. This amounts to £7,500 in attendee charges that we have to cover.

To give you an insight as to what this could fund:

£5 buys 100 plastic test tubes.
£13 buys agarose gel, which is a vital component for a technique that scientists use to measure the length of pieces of DNA.
£20 buys a lab coat.
£50 buys a microscope lens.
£95 buys a Wright-Giemsa cell staining kit, which our scientists use to distinguish between different types of blood cells.
£21k could fund a research nurse for 6 months.

The above are real examples given by CRUK. Imagine the endless of items we could fund from the cost of the no-shows at our symposium (and even more with our other events)! If you cannot attend the event, we please ask you to let us know as soon as possible. We do not want to start charging attendees and want to avoid having to pay the fees of the non-attendees.

Information Stalls:

Members of our Oxford Cancer Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group will be in attendance at the conference. Their stall will be located in the main networking area of the venue. Please visit them should you need any PPI help or advice.

POSTER ABSTRACT GUIDANCE:

The Symposium will feature poster sessions showcasing the world-leading work taking place in Oxford. Posters are open to all levels of researchers and are not limited to younger scientists. 45 places will be available. Please submit an abstract for your poster using the below guidance and note that chosen abstracts will feature in our digital events brochure:

The tickets for this event are limited. We reserve the right to close registration before the deadline if we reach capacity.
