Oxford Insight Meditation Online Day Retreat with Venerable Canda
Event Information
About this Event
Saturday 23rd January 2021 9:30am-4:30pm UK time, online
We are very happy to welcome Venerable Canda to lead this day long online retreat for Oxford Insight Meditation. The theme for the day is Rejoicing in Muditā. Venerable Canda says "To support ourselves and others, and remain balanced in challenging times, the Buddha gave us the practice of muditā (sympathetic joy). As one of the brahmavihārās (divine abodes), it encourages the celebration of happiness, success, freedom and joy, of others as well as inside oneself. Learning how to do this nurtures and inspires us, making it easier to tap into feelings of compassion, kindness and even love, also when faced with suffering." Ven. Candā will offer different ways to recognise, cultivate and celebrate our inherent goodness, and explore how focussing on the goodness of life as a path to our own happiness also contributes to the happiness of all sentient beings.
The day will include periods of sitting and walking meditation, Dhamma reflections and an opportunity for Q&A. The day runs from 9:30am until roughly 4:30pm and will include a lunch break of at least 1 hour. The day is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience of meditation practice.
Venerable Canda began meditating in 1996 with SN Goenka. She ordained as a Buddhist nun in Burma in 2006 and subsequently took full ‘bhikkhuni’ ordination under the guidance of her Teacher, Ajahn Brahm. Her approach to meditation focuses on kindness and letting go as a means to deepening stillness and is increasingly informed by the early Buddhist texts. Venerable Canda founded Anukampa Bhikkhuni Project with Ajahn Brahm- a UK charity aimed at establishing a nun’s monastery in the UK.
Dana Venerable Canda offers her teaching in the spirit of generosity. We invite you to make a 'dana' donation to to the Anukampa Project of which Venerable Canda is the spiritual director. This is a time of financial uncertainty for many of us, our invitation is to reflect on the value of the teachings and the service to our community that Venerable Canda so generously offers whilst also bearing in mind your own financial situation when considering what you can offer.
To make a donation please go to: https://anukampaproject.org/donate/
We are currently unable to process donations for our teachers through Eventbrite.
Donating to Oxford Insight Meditation Registration for this online event is free. We invite you to offer dana to our teachers to support their work and livelihood (see above). In addition, when you register for our online events there is an opportunity to make a donation to Oxford insight Meditation. We are seeking donations to help cover our operating costs (which are reduced in an online world, but still accumulate). Suggested donation is £1-£5.
Insight Meditation is a simple technique derived directly from the teachings of the Buddha, which has been practised for over 2,500 years. The practice begins by calming the mind, usually through resting attention on the sensations of the breath. Through being present in each moment, our heart and mind can awaken to a depth of peace and clarity which allows grasping, judgement and fear to fall away.
All are welcome. We are committed to creating an inclusive retreat space. We welcome people irrespective of religious or political beliefs, ethnicity, class, sexuality, gender, age, ability and culture.
The Zoom link will be emailed, to the email address that you gave on registration, roughly 1 week before the retreat and again on the morning of the retreat.
