About this event

  • 5 hours

Join us for a peaceful and restorative two days learning about wood selection and character, paddle shapes, uses and history, and the safe use of an axe, draw knife and finer carving tools.

You’ll ‘rough out’ your paddle shape and start work on shaving away the bulk on day one.  You’ll camp under the stars and then day two will be spent on the finer detail, sanding and finishing with oil and an optional Axe & Paddle heat stamp.

The course is hosted within our woodland in the stunning countryside of the Brecon Beacons.

We lay on all the campfire tea and coffee you can bring and provide snacks.  Please bring your own food (which you are welcome to cook over the fire) and your own tent and sleeping gear.  Or you can rent our Baker Tent or Whelen Shelter and sleeping bag for £50, if you prefer.

“Highly recommended!” - Ollie Sandeman, Freelance Canoe Instructor

Experience includes:

  • All the tools and materials you'll need
  • Campfire tea and coffee and snacks - bring your own food to cook over the fire
  • Leave with the skills to be able to practice carving on your own
  • Take home your hand-carved paddle
  • Camping

Organised by

Axe & Paddle Bushcraft began back in 2012, when husband and wife team Steven and Kirsty Le Say hosted a Spoon Carving Workshop in a friend’s garden.

We’ve just relocated and opened up our own studio, on an 8 acre smallholding in the Brecon Beacons National Park - where we now host a number of courses, teaching traditional skills and crafts. We also have Shepherds Hut accommodation and camping available.
