Paediatric Recovery Foundation Course

Module introduction

This module aims to critically analyse the immediate postoperative care of children and young people in the paediatric recovery unit. It will provide a foundation level knowledge and clinical skills for paediatric recovery nurses, adult nurses and ODP’s looking after paediatric patients in recovery.

Paediatric recovery foundation module will enable practitioners to provide competent evidence based care for paediatric patients by effectively assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating their care. They will understand and promote the role of a paediatric recovery nurse/practitioner.

Participants undertaking this module are expected to be a registered nurse or ODP working in a postoperative care environment. Participants will need their employers support to complete assessments in clinical practice.

Module structure

This module consists of 5 learning blocks comprising of stimulating virtual workshops, online activities, forum discussions and a portfolio of assessment.

The assessment for this module will include, interaction on forums, exam to assess knowledge acquisition and completing the practice assessment document.

In the development of this module we have worked with local Higher Education Institutes to offer work based learning credits.

Learning aims

By the end of this module students will be able to:

• Understand paediatric anatomy and physiology in relation to immediate postoperative care in the postoperative care unit
• Critically evaluate the role of a paediatric recovery nurse/practitioner
• Interpret paediatric specific theory to support clinical role
• Demonstrate competency of clinical skills in nursing paediatric patients in recovery
