Target audience
The Paediatric Surgical Masterclasses are virtual learning sessions pitched towards band 5 nurses caring for surgical patients. AHP's also welcome.
About the programme
These masterclasses will give you an insight into common surgical and orthopaedic conditions and the associated complications and care pathways. It will consist of a combination of live and pre-recorded lectures, interactive discussions, Q&A sessions and case studies.
You can attend one or all of the days.
Short stay surgery: 9th October2025
This surgical masterclass will focus on the patient journey of children on a day case and short stay unit and the concept of criteria led discharge.
The day will cover anatomy and physiology before exploring the following
Anaesthetics:
· Premedication
ENT:
· T+A’s & associated complications
· Grommets
· MLB – papillomas
· Cochlear implants
Urology:
· Hypospadias
· Circumcision
· Orchidopexy
· Urodynamics

Welcome to Bay 1 of our Surgical Ward. Bay 1 is for babies under 1 year with a variety of surgical conditions, come along and meet
Mohammed, an 8 month old with intussusception
Blessing, a 7 day old with pyloric stenosis
Aimee, a 2 week old with Hirschsprungs
Fahim, a 10 day old with Malrotation and Volvulus
For each of our patients we will explore the diagnosis, treatment and management – such as parental nutrition and stomas, and ongoing care involved. The roles and involvement of various members of the MDT will be discussed, including Surgeons, CNS’s, Dieticians, Speech and Language Therapists.
Orthopaedic surgery: TBC
This Masterclass will have an orthopaedic focus starting with a refresher on skeletal anatomy and physiology, we will look at orthopaedic problems seen in the paediatric population including:- Compartment syndrome
- Osteomyelitis/septic arthritis
- DDH – Hip spica care
- Slipper Upper Femoral Epiphysis
- Perthes
- External fixators
Meet our patients and follow their journey from presentation, assessment, diagnosis, management and recovery.Ben – 13 year displaced right ulna fracture after falling from skate ramp. Going to theatre for MUA.
Ali – 18/12 – Admitted with osteomyelitis – washout in theatre. IVABs
Charlie 1yr – DDH, closed reduction, hip spica, theatre today.
Osmond – 15yrs – SUFE, theatre today.
Appendicectomy:TBC
Meet River, a 5 year old girl. River presented to her local A&E with 2 day history of right sided abdominal pain and vomiting. Day 1 will delve into Rivers patient journey, meeting the various members of the MDT involved in her care and the exploring the interventions that River required.
The day will look at:
· Anatomy and physiology of the gut
· The journey of a patient with an appendicitis
· Post-operative care
· Pain management
· Wound care
· Bowel obstructions and gut motility
· Parental Nutrition
· Gastrostomies
· Stomas
· CVAD’s
· Care of the complex patient
